Installing New Viewers
──────────────────────
To install all the files on the Bonus Viewer Disk automatically, insert
the disk in your A drive, and type INSTALL from the A: prompt.
If you did not install Magellan to the C:\MAG2 directory or if you are
not installing from the A drive, you must also type the drive letters of
the floppy drive and the drive where Magellan is installed, and the
directory name of the Magellan program directory. The drive letters
should be followed by a colon and a space. For example, if you install
from your computer's B drive to D:\MAGELLAN, type the path name of the
directory where you installed Magellan after install:
INSTALL A: D: \MAGELLAN

Using the New Viewers
─────────────────────
Once you have installed the new viewers on your hard disk, Magellan will
automatically use them the next time you start up.
When Magellan accesses a file, it checks all the viewers it can find and
determines which viewers can interpret that file. Each viewer is
"ranked" according to how well it can read and display the file. By
default, the highest-ranking viewer is the one used. Pressing <Ins>
allows you to cycle through all possible viewers for that file. For
example, if you point to a .WK1 file, the 1-2-3 viewer is used, but
pressing <Ins> will cycle to the Symphony viewer (because the formats
are similar), the Text viewer, the ASCII viewer, the Binary viewer, and
then back to the 1-2-3 viewer. You can also press <Ctrl-F8> to see a
list of all viewers available for a given file.
Because viewers are used in the indexing process, you may want to
rebuild your indexes once you have installed the new viewers. You only
need to do this if you wish to Explore for information in files with
formats supported by the new viewers.
PIF and Icon files for Windows 3.0
───────────────────────────────────
Magellan is a non-Windows application. It can be run in full-screen
display in real or standard mode, and as a full-screen or windowed
display in 386 enhanced mode. It can only be run in full-screen display
if you wish to use a mouse with Magellan.
Magellan cannot run in graphics mode from a window. Since you will not
be able to view files using the graphics viewers, rename them. Also,
you should not use MG94.COM.
Windows applications cannot be launched from a Magellan Windows
application. Non-Windows applications can be launched.
Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain FILES=40 when running Magellan under
Windows 3.0.
MG.PIF and MAGELLAN.ICO are files which can be used to set up Magellan
for Windows 3.0. They are copied to your Magellan directory when you
install the Bonus Viewer Disk. MG.PIF will run MGMOUSE, so to use it
you must load your mouse driver before running Magellan from Windows.
You can run Magellan directly from Windows by double-clicking on MG.PIF
from the File Manager. You can also add MG.PIF to a Program Manager
group.
To run Magellan from an icon, select File New from the Program Manager.
Choose Program Item from the New Program Object dialog box. In the
Program Item Properties dialog box, type Magellan 2.0 in the Description
field, and C:\MAG2\MG.PIF in the Command Line field. Choose Change
Icon. Type C:\MAG2\MAGELLAN.ICO in the File Name field in the Select
Icon dialog box.
And Finally...
